    Heritage

    Malting originated as a food preservation technique in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt around 3000 BCE, when brewers discovered that germinating barley created predictable sweetness and stability. Scotland became synonymous with malt through its whisky heritage, where Single Malt Scotch built global recognition for malt's rich, complex flavors.     How Malt Is Made

    Malt in perfumery is primarily a synthetic reconstruction of the malting process. Barley or other grains are steeped in water to trigger germination, then kilned at controlled temperatures to halt growth while developing flavor compounds. The toasting temperature determines whether the resulting malt notes carry light, honeyed warmth or deep, roasted intensity reminiscent of chocolate or coffee. Key aroma compounds such as furaneol, sotolon, and vanillin are combined to capture the warm, sweet, slightly toasted character of malted grain. Natural malt extracts, derived from barley or wheat through solvent extraction, also exist but see limited use due to their subtle aroma compared to reconstructed molecules. The result is a warm, grainy sweetness that adds comfort and depth to fragrance compositions.
