The Story of Adriana Medina-Baez, John Gamba, Calice Becker

Calice Becker began her perfumery journey not in a classroom but at her mother's kitchen table, where a childhood inability to recognize people by name, only by scent, was reframed as a gift. That early sensitivity led her to study at the Givaudan Academy in Grasse before her 1984 debut at Roure Bertrand Dupont. She ascended through Quest International, earning the classical French perfumery education she now directs at Givaudan's own school. Adriana Medina-Baez arrived at Givaudan from a different angle: a Biology degree and a Master's in Cosmetic Science from Fairleigh Dickinson, yet she entered not as a perfumer but as a lab technician, absorbing the craft through hands-on laboratory apprenticeship that fused scientific rigor with creative instinct. She attended the Givaudan Perfumery School in 2000 and never looked back. John Gamba, equally embedded in the Givaudan collective, has partnered with both Becker and Medina-Baez across multiple successful lines. Together, this trio brings three distinct entry points into the same craft: classical French mastery, American scientific precision, and the steady collaborative hand that binds them. Medina-Baez, a Colombian-born VP Perfumer, has spoken of this industry as her life's work, celebrating thirty years in the field and twenty-four as a nose. Becker's recognition includes The Fragrance Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award, and her mentorship now shapes the next generation from Grasse.

    Philosophy

Becker has spoken of surprise as the essential ingredient, the quality that elevates a fragrance from pleasant to unforgettable. Medina-Baez carries a different conviction: she dislikes fragrances that are shy. Where Becker seeks the unexpected, Medina-Baez demands presence. Both approaches converge in their collaborative philosophy. Medina-Baez describes fragrance as a book with beginning, middle, and end, where the entire evolution matters. Neither of them builds scents that recede. Their shared work aims for impact that lasts, compositions that announce themselves at the opening and evolve with intention through the drydown. This is a team that believes in the power of a fragrance to make an emotional connection, to build an olfactive DNA that resonates with consumers over time. The combination of Becker's classical restraint and Medina-Baez's fearlessness creates work that is neither safe nor chaotic.

    Creative Approach

Becker's style carries the weight of classical French training: structured, elegant, with an instinct for surprise embedded in every composition. Medina-Baez brings bold character and technical precision from her scientific background, constructing fragrances that refuse to be ignored. The three-way collaboration introduces additional dimensions. Becker's signature approach draws from nature, art, and music, with bitter orange cited as a favored ingredient. Medina-Baez gravitates toward compositions with strong emotional presence. Their shared work spans floral orientals, sparkling fruity florals, and modern chypres, built with layered complexity and lasting sillage. The style is premium, confident, and designed for consumers who want fragrance to make a statement. Long wear and emotional resonance define their output.
