The Story of Annick Menardo and Suzy Le Helley

Annick Ménardo studied biochemistry and medicine before pivoting to perfumery at ISIPCA in Versailles. Michel Almairac mentored her at Créations Aromatiques, where she began developing her structural approach to fragrance. She joined Firmenich in 1991 and spent nearly three decades there building a body of work known for boldness and clarity. In 2018, she moved to Symrise to take on new creative challenges. Her work includes landmark creations like Boss Bottled and the iconic Hypnotic Poison. More recently, she has collaborated with Suzy Le Helley, a younger perfumer who trained under her mentorship, on several Boss Bottled flankers. Suzy Le Helley grew up sensitive to landscapes and botanical detail. Her decision to pursue perfumery as a profession solidified during her high school years, around 2008. She trained at the Symrise perfumery school alongside the company's senior perfumers, catching the attention of Annick Ménardo and Maurice Roucel, who became her mentors. She later enrolled at ISIPCA in 2012, where she worked on regulatory reformulation and explored AI-driven fragrance development through tools like Philyra. Her travels, particularly to Madagascar, deepened her direct knowledge of natural raw materials and local sourcing communities. Since 2008, she has created work for brands including Acne Studios and contributed to the Boss Bottled franchise alongside Annick Ménardo.

    Philosophy

"A fragrance is good when the accord surprises me." Ménardo composes for those who know how to listen. For her, perfume is not merely a craft but a form of communication between creator and wearer. She draws creative energy from art, literature, and everyday sensations, seeking chords and melodies that resonate unexpectedly. She values originality but understands the demands of the industry, balancing vision with commercial reality. Le Helley approaches perfumery with what she describes as a landscape sensibility, translating places and botanicals into olfactory form. She favors readable, understandable compositions that let each ingredient carry its weight, and draws continuously from the diversity of plants, scents, and flavors encountered through her travels.

    Creative Approach

Ménardo's formulations tend toward brevity and force. She builds clear, structured accords that communicate a distinct idea without excess ornamentation. Her scientific background informs a precise approach to composition, and her palette spans natural materials and synthetic molecules with equal authority. She is known for surprising combinations and a willingness to push against conventions of what a fragrance should be. Le Helley works with short, precise formulas that prioritize clarity over complexity. Her olfactive style is readable and accessible, shaped by botanical sensitivity and a preference for natural materials sourced directly from her travels. Madagascar features prominently in her raw material vocabulary. She brings computational and AI-tool experience from her time at ISIPCA to develop innovative fragrance concepts.
