The Story of Christine Nagel, Francis Kurkdjian
Christine Nagel and Francis Kurkdjian represent two distinct paths into perfumery that converged on one of the most celebrated fragrance collaborations of the past two decades. Nagel, a Swiss chemist who began her career examining fragrance molecules at Firmenich before breaking into Italy's perfume market, and Kurkdjian, a French perfumer who launched his career at just twenty-six with the blockbuster Le Male for Jean Paul Gaultier in 1995, joined forces in 2003 for Narciso Rodriguez for Her. Their partnership proved immediate: the scent won the Fragrance Foundation France Award for best women's fragrance in 2005. Nagel went on to become Hermès' in-house perfumer in 2016, while Kurkdjian built Maison Francis Kurkdjian with business partner Marc Chaya and, in 2021, took the creative director role at Christian Dior. Their collaboration remains a landmark in modern perfumery, proof that chemistry and instinct, when paired, can create something lasting.
Philosophy
Both perfumers share an interest in emotional resonance over spectacle. Nagel describes her approach as seeking fragrances that 'tickle your sensitivity' and believes anyone can wear any scent regardless of gender conventions. She credits her scientific training with teaching her patience and precision, while Kurkdjian has spoken about perfumery as storytelling, creating fragrances that evoke memory and desire. Their Narciso Rodriguez for Her exemplified this shared philosophy: a deliberately intimate, skin-close musky signature that refused loudness in favor of presence.
Creative Approach
Nagel favors clean, minimal structures with muscular drydowns; she trained under Michel Almairac and later developed an androgynous fougere sensibility that critic Tania Sanchez called 'fantastic beauty.' Her work spans from fruity gourmands to austere colognes, often threading salt, wood, or citrus through minimalist frames. Kurkdjian's signature leans toward sophisticated florals and modern chypres, with Baccarat Rouge 540 showcasing his comfort with synthetic musks and ambery woods. Together, their style on Narciso Rodriguez for Her married Nagel's skin-close musks with Kurkdjian's structural elegance, creating an accord critics noted as totally new.
