The Story of Dominique Ropion, Claire Liégent

Dominique Ropion grew up surrounded by the trade. His mother and grandfather both worked at Roure, and by fifteen he was spending school vacations doing weighings at the Grasse laboratory, rubbing shoulders with perfumers like Raymond Chaillan and Jacques Polge. He initially pursued physics, but the pull of the industry proved irresistible. He secured an internship, then enrolled at the Roure school in Grasse. After fine fragrance work in Argenteuil, he spent nine years partnered with Jean-Louis Sieuzac—creator of Opium and Dune—before becoming head perfumer at Dragoco. In 2000 he joined IFF, where he earned the title of Master Perfumer in 2018. Ropion has built a body of work spanning confidential releases for Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle and blockbuster mass-market scents. His portfolio includes Alien, Flowerbomb, La Vie Est Belle, and Lady Million—proving he moves effortlessly between boutique and mainstream. Claire Liégent co-founded Nose Paris, the fragrance culture platform that has become a reference point for enthusiasts in France. She works as a fine fragrance perfumer, though detailed career information remains limited in public sources. Her involvement in Nose Paris suggests a profile that bridges creative practice and industry community-building.

    Philosophy

Ropion views perfumery as a "minor art" in the best sense—concrete, manual, and labor-intensive. He has said the work resembles sculpting: you cut, file, and break down odors until something emerges. The process is iterative and unpredictable; accords surprise him, and he tramples formulas in every direction until they cohere. Where many younger perfumers are pushed to become operational quickly, Ropion took time to master the chemical composition of raw materials. This encyclopedic knowledge underpins his technical precision. He describes fragrance as architecture and painting combined—you build foundations and handle materials with your hands. For Liégent, the Nose Paris venture signals an interest in democratizing fragrance culture alongside perfumery practice.

    Creative Approach

Ropion favors structured compositions with strong accords and clear architecture. He has a particular affinity for florals—his nickname "Master of Flowers" reflects this—though he also handles orientals with power (Jungle Elephant, Alien). He favors working with a limited palette of high-impact materials rather than maximalist layering. Notes of iris and vetiver recur in his Malle Editions work, while his mass-market scents reveal a command of immediate, wearable pleasure. Liégent's style remains less documented, though her Nose Paris involvement suggests engagement with diverse fragrance aesthetics.
