The Artisan
The Story of IFF (International Flavors & Fragrances)
IFF traces its origins to 1889, when two entrepreneurs Josef Polak and Leopold Schwarz set up shop around a kitchen table in the Netherlands, building one of Europe's most respected essence producers. After merging with the fragrance-focused van Ameringen-Haebler in 1958, the combined entity relocated to New York and built the American fragrance industry from the ground up. Headquartered in Manhattan—the self-proclaimed birthplace of American perfumery—IFF became the industry's largest creative force, operating across 44 countries with thousands of fragrance compounds developed annually. The house pioneered a distinctly American aesthetic: bold, liberated, freed from European tradition. Through a combination of internal training programs, its own perfumery school, and partnerships with institutions like ISIPCA in Versailles, IFF has produced generations of perfumers who shaped the modern market. The company lists more than twenty perfumers whose work appears in Michael Edwards' book "American Legends," covering iconic fragrances across the industry. Anne Flipo, a Master Perfumer at IFF, received the Fragrance Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023.
Philosophy
IFF operates on the principle that science and creativity are inseparable. The house treats perfumery as applied chemistry, building its palette from proprietary molecules and proprietary extraction technologies rather than simply sourcing stock materials. Its Living Flower technology, developed in 1985, revolutionized the field by enabling the accurate capture and recreation of a flower's scent at its peak, shifting the entire industry toward realism. IFF describes its mission simply: to make joy through science, creativity, and heart. Its perfumers work at the intersection of molecular innovation and sensory intuition, supported by a company structure that gives individual creators access to rare natural ingredients, proprietary molecules like Galaxolide and ISO E, and some of the most advanced botanical research facilities in the world.
Creative Approach
IFF's signature style is rooted in modern American fragrance: powerful, clear, and direct. The house has built its reputation on synthetic and semi-synthetic molecules that give its creations unmistakable sillage and longevity—Galaxolide, ISO E, Cashmeran, and AmberXtreme all appear routinely in IFF compositions. Living Flower technology gives the house a unique advantage with natural realism, particularly in floral categories. The overall character tends toward confident, expansive constructions rather than the nuanced delicacy of French houses. IFF perfumers frequently work with bold oriental structures, aquatic interpretations with clean synthetic backbones, and fresh greens built on proprietary aromatic chemicals. The house is equally at home creating mass-market successes and niche compositions for external clients. Natural ingredients sourced through IFF LMR Naturals—which absorbed Laboratoire Monique Rémy in 2000—complement the house's molecular expertise, allowing perfumers to blend technical precision with high-quality naturals.
