The Story of Loc Dong, Anne Flipo and Dominique Ropion

Three masters, three distinct sensibilities, one extraordinary creative partnership. Dominique Ropion trained at Roure Bertrand Dupont before joining IFF in 2000, building a reputation for architectural precision and bold material choices. Anne Flipo arrived at IFF in 2004 from the Versailles perfumery school, where a revelation during her studies transformed fragrance into a lifelong game and challenge. Loc Dong rounds out the trio with a gift for texture and emotional clarity, shaping compositions from the inside out. Together, these three have redefined what luxury fragrance can achieve. Ropion's Portrait of a Lady for Frédéric Malle stands as one of the most acclaimed compositions of the past two decades. Flipo's La Vie Est Belle for Lancôme became a global phenomenon, reshaping the women's fragrance landscape. As collaborators, their shared instinct for balance between structure and sensation has produced some of the most compelling fragrances of recent years. Their combined portfolio spans heritage houses, bold fashion brands, and exacting niche houses. At IFF's Paris laboratory, the three work in constant dialogue, each pushing the others toward something unexpected.

    Philosophy

"My quest remains the same," Flipo says, and the sentiment runs through all three. They believe fragrance operates at the intersection of intellect and sensation, that every material carries emotional weight, and that the perfumer's role is to find the precise arrangement that makes someone stop and feel something. Ropion approaches each composition as an architect might, solving structural problems while leaving room for surprise. Flipo treats fragrance like a sensory game, translating feelings into olfactory form. Loc Dong adds a layer of textural understanding that elevates the finished work. Together, they share a refusal to sacrifice depth for wearability or vice versa. The best work, they insist, does both at once.

    Creative Approach

Ropion's style leans dramatic and architectural, favouring contrasts that command attention: cool and warm, sharp and soft, familiar ingredients in unfamiliar proportions. His work spans from the plush sensuality of Alien to the austere grandeur of Portrait of a Lady. Flipo draws on a palette rooted in nature, especially florals and herbs, yet applies them with quiet rigour. Hand-written formulas remain part of her process. Her fragrances tend toward the luminous and green, from the startling freshness of Synthetic Jungle to the honeyed femininity of Lady Million. Loc Dong brings textural mastery and a modern sensibility, layering materials with precision to create scents that feel both contemporary and timeless. The trio's shared signature is complexity that never overwhelms, boldness that remains wearable.
