The Artisan
The Story of Pierre Negrin and Carlos Viñals
Carlos Viñals grew up watching his father, a flavorist working in the tobacco industry, and found himself drawn into the world of scent at an early age. He began his career at IFF as an assistant, where his raw talent caught the attention of Bernard Chant and Carlos Benaïm within months. They selected him for a formal perfumer apprenticeship, and he spent a decade refining his craft under Benaïm's mentorship. He went on to build his career across several major fragrance houses before joining Symrise in 2009. Pierre Negrin, born into a family of perfume merchants in Grasse, initially pursued photography before a friend offered him an internship in a perfumer's workshop during his physics and chemistry studies. He never attended a formal perfumery school, learning the craft instead in fragrance laboratories. A summer internship became a lifelong calling. "Suddenly I realized that instead of expressing myself through light, I could express myself through fragrance," he later said. Negrin moved from Grasse to Mexico and eventually to the United States, joining Firmenich's New York Fine Fragrance Center in 2008. Together, they have shaped the olfactory identities of major brands across prestige and mass-market categories.
Philosophy
Viñals believes scent is the substance of identity. "Scent created who I am," he has said. His goal as a perfumer is not merely to design a fragrance but to trigger something deeper: a memory, an emotional response, a smile. He draws strong associations between smells and recollection, calling upon this understanding in every creation. Negrin operates with grounded restraint. "I firmly believe the earth is the matter, the true origin of our industry," he has stated. "You can have your head in the clouds as long as you have your feet on the ground." He avoids ostentation and excess, preferring clarity and authenticity. He has compared his work to writing and speaks often of images and how fragrance is perceived. His philosophy holds that the humblest ingredients, composed with care, can yield work of genuine art.
Creative Approach
Viñals works across a broad range of fragrance types, moving between creative indie projects and commercial work with equal fluency. He has spoken of the freedom that comes from working without constraints, and this openness shows in his portfolio. His background in tobacco and flavor chemistry gives him a particular comfort with texture and contrast, especially in gourmand and warm woody constructions. Negrin's style is rooted in natural materials and earthy authenticity. He is drawn to raw, grounded notes and favors compositions that reveal depth without complication. His work for Amouage showcases his ability to handle monumental, resinous structures, while his commercial fragrances for Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren demonstrate a quieter, minimalist precision. Together, the two bring complementary instincts to their collaborations: Viñals with his sensory memory-driven creativity, Negrin with his earth-toned minimalism.
