The Story of Thierry Wasser, Delphine Jelk
Born in Switzerland, Thierry Wasser never followed a conventional path into perfumery. He dropped out of school before discovering his calling in a drugstore internship, then pursued formal training in botany and gained admission to the prestigious Givaudan Perfumery School in Geneva. Promoted to perfumer at 24, he spent years at Firmenich collaborating with Annick Ménardo, creating signatures for Dior Addict and Lancôme. In 2008, Guerlain broke with 180 years of tradition, appointing Wasser as its first non-family Master Perfumer. He joined Jean-Paul Guerlain as an apprentice, learning the sacred rituals of raw material sourcing and the legendary Guerlinade. Delphine Jelk, also Swiss-born, arrived at Guerlain in 2014. Her first creation, La Petite Robe Noire, became an instant bestseller and secured her place at the house. Together, Wasser and Jelk now share the creative reins, Wasser's visionary direction paired with Jelk's hands-on creation, bridging Guerlain's romantic heritage with contemporary sensibility. In 2014, France awarded Wasser the Légion d'Honneur. He travels four months yearly, visiting suppliers across continents to source exceptional naturals. Jelk tests every accord on her own skin before submission. Their partnership embodies Guerlain's future: intimate, collaborative, and grounded in botanical excellence.
Philosophy
Wasser describes himself as a pragmatic poet. He believes fragrance must reflect the wearer, not dominate them, and insists creation cannot be rushed. He draws parallels between perfume and modern art, particularly the textured canvases of Mark Rothko, seeing scent as having tactile qualities. For Wasser, sourcing matters as much as composition; he considers personal bonds with suppliers essential to a fragrance's story. Jelk approaches creation as pure storytelling, drawing inspiration from literature and travel. Together, they reject the modern marketing-first model. Where Jean-Paul Guerlain created with his heart and built stories afterward, they honor that romantic tradition. "My job is unlike most perfumers because I am responsible for the fragrance from overseeing the harvest of the ingredients right through to when they go into the bottle." Neither wears perfume during creative work, preserving olfactory clarity. They believe bespoke creation represents perfumery's highest art, and each fragrance must first pass personal testing.
