Outlands arrived in 2024 as part of The Amouage Essences, a collection that brought a new direction to the house's offerings. Cécile Zarokian composed it, drawing from her background in French perfumery. The name suggests territories beyond the known: the edges, the margins, the places where maps end and something else begins. It invites the wearer to explore those outer reaches, to step into an olfactory world that operates by its own logic. The composition reflects a commitment to complexity, with materials layered in a way that rewards attention and patience. Those who wear it find themselves in territory that feels unfamiliar yet compelling, drawing them deeper with each wearing.

What makes Outlands structurally unusual is the base note tension. Vanilla and maltol pull the drydown toward something sweet, almost edible, a warm, powdery sweetness. But oud, birch, and ambergris pull it toward smoke, tar, and animalic depth. The labdanum and benzoin work as mediators, their balsamic warmth bridging the gap between gourmand sweetness and dark resinous earth. The six-month aging process, including double infusion with sandalwood chips and oakwood barrels, allows these materials to settle and develop their fullest potential.

The opening is the most citrus-forward Amouage has produced in recent memory. Bergamot and lemon dominate, with Sichuan pepper providing a clean, tingly counterpoint. The frankincense enters quietly, wrapped in cardamom's warmth. Thirty minutes in, the spices arrive, saffron, cumin, star anise, and the fragrance shifts into its warm, complex heart. Patchouli anchors everything with earthiness, while rose and geranium add floral moments that occasionally surface through the spice. By hour three, the amber base has established itself. Vanilla and benzoin create a honeyed sweetness. The oud and birch provide structure, a subtle darkness that keeps the sweetness from becoming saccharine. Musk and ambergris linger in the background, close to skin but detectable, for most of the remaining wear. Ten hours is not unusual. Twelve is possible on dry skin. The next morning, traces of benzoin and labdanum remain on fabric, the signature of something that didn't want to leave.

Outlands represents the Essences collection's attempt to translate Amouage's heritage into a more modern format. The collection introduced a new bottle, the first significant redesign in fifteen years, signaling both a refresh of the brand's visual identity and a commitment to the original Essences concept. Wearers describe it as the scent of someone who enters a room and doesn't need to announce themselves. The intensity sets it apart from lighter, safer compositions in the Amouage range, appealing to those who want full presence and projection.
