The Story
Why it exists.
The Different Company was founded with a belief in streamlined perfumery, compositions stripped to their essential elements, with nothing added that doesn't earn its place. Sens & Bois, launched in 2006, embodies that philosophy. Created by Céline Ellena, it presents as an uncomplicated woody-spicy, yet something more interesting happens beneath that surface. The ginger and pepper open bright and immediate, then quietly recede. The heart settles into something softer. It's a fragrance that trusts the wearer to discover its depth rather than announcing it upfront. Simple in structure, unhurried in evolution, and confident enough to stay out of its own way.

The Beginning
What makes the base unusual is the inclusion of Chinese toon, a wood that's rarely used in Western perfumery but carries a distinctive, almost pencil-wood character that sets it apart from more conventional cedar or sandalwood. Combined with elemi resin, which brings a bright, citrusy-resinous quality, the base avoids the heaviness that can weigh down purely woody fragrances. Instead of stacking woods on top of each other, Ellena lets them intertwine and breathe, creating something that feels airy even as it lingers on skin for hours.
The Evolution
The opening hits fast, ginger and pepper arrive together, sharp and immediate, with bergamot providing a brief citrus flash before the spices settle. By the time the white violet and neroli emerge, the ginger has already stepped back. The frankincense doesn't assert itself loudly. It's woven through the heart rather than dominating it, adding subtle nuance without overwhelming the florals. The real evolution happens in the base: Chinese toon, elemi, patchouli, sandalwood, and cedar layer together, with sandalwood and cedar becoming increasingly prominent as the hours pass. On skin, Sens & Bois lasts 8-10 hours, and the drydown, warm, woody, with just a hint of patchouli earthiness, lingers long after the top notes have faded.
Cultural Impact
Sens & Bois attracts wearers who appreciate restraint over proclamation. It doesn't announce itself when you enter a room, but those close enough will notice something warm and sophisticated. The frankincense is woven throughout rather than shouted, making it approachable for those who find traditional incense fragrances overwhelming. It's versatile across seasons and occasions, though it truly shines in cooler weather when the woody drydown comes into its own. Wearers tend to describe it as the fragrance of someone who doesn't need to explain themselves, a quiet confidence that rewards attention rather than demanding it.

Like the fragrance itself, sophisticated restraint with hidden warmth. The wood notes and subtle spice invite you in rather than announce themselves.
